Curú Wildlife Refuge is located in the southeastern region of the Nicoya Peninsula on the west coast of Costa Rica. Established in 1933 by Federico Schutt, Curú was the first private Wildlife Reserve in Costa Rica and functions as a successful sustainable development program. The area is abundant with a rich diversity of wildlife and contains five distinct ecosystems ranging from marine, mangrove, tropical dry forest, wet forest and farmland, including Quesera, Poza Colorada and Playa Curú beaches.
Containing more than 232 species of birds, 78 species of mammals, 87 reptiles, 25 amphibians and 500 species of plants, this wildlife refuge successfully combines sustainable agriculture, forestry management and wildlife protection in addition to eco-tourism, and provides easy access for the environmentally conscious tourist to enjoy the abundance on offer.
